Workshop A: PROBLEMATIC MEDICATION USE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Specialists in the fields of medical ethics, addiction medicine, and the law will address common problems encountered when patients use prescribed medications in problematic ways. Discussions will include the use of medication contracts, proposed changes to California statutes, recent law suits involving both under and over prescribing, and clinical issues related to termination or limitation of care.

Workshop B: THE FAMILY IN THE DISEASE OF ADDICTION
The roles of family members and aspects such as denial and behaviors perpetuating the addiction in the identified patient are the focus of this workshop. Participants will improve their ability to interact with family members in a supportive yet informative way to enhance comprehensive treatment for the patient and the family.

Workshop C: CURRENT CONTROVERSIES IN ADDICTION MEDICINE
An on-going controversy in addiction medicine concerns the role and effectiveness of abstinence based programs vs. narcotic replacement treatment. This translates into whether patients on methadone or buprenorphine should be allowed into treatment groups. Two expert physicians, each on opposite sides of the debate, will express their “point-counterpoint” viewpoints on this topic and others in our field. A debate instructor will facilitate to help participants distinguish between logical arguments and fallacies. Other controversies to be addressed include the role of pharmaceutical company support: is pharmaceutical support of CME an insidious corrupting influence or wrongly maligned benefit? In addition to gaining a better understanding of controversial issues, participants will learn how to analyze evidence, argumentation, and ethical issues.

Workshop D: ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE: CLINICAL ASPECTS
A review of epidemiology and treatment approaches adapting substance use treatment to the adolescent brain and environment. Participants will learn to identify which drugs are used commonly by which age groups, adapt known treatment approaches to the adolescent patient and use age specific motivational enhancement strategies.

Workshop E: PAIN AND ADDICTION: ADDRESSING THE TOUGH CASES
A case-based approach to address the tough choices faced by clinicians in dealing with the complex interaction of pain and addiction. A panel of experts will address each case from the perspectives of neuro¬biology, pharmacology, treatment planning and clinical follow-up.

Workshop F: MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF PATIENTS ON METHADONE: THE CURRENT STANDARD OF CARE
Based on the CSAM “Guidelines for Physicians Working in California OTPs,” this course is designed for medical personnel in methadone treatment programs and for physicians interested in the specifics of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). Topics covered include: patient selection, safety issues in induction onto methadone, the individualized treatment plan, co-morbid medical conditions--particularly hepatitis C and HIV, pregnancy and neonatal issues for the mother in MMT. The final hour will be given to addressing tough cases.
